I arrived at Bosque del Apache NWR in New Mexico on a chilly December morning, well before sunrise. With my Nikon D3 and 24mm lens set up, I stood before thousands of Snow Geese roosting on a shallow lake. As the sun began to rise, high-altitude clouds ignited the sky with fiery hues, casting a brilliant red reflection across the water.
The dark silhouettes of the geese stood out against this glowing canvas. Just ten minutes after I captured this moment, the color faded—and the geese erupted into the sky, headed for the day’s feeding grounds.
