This photo was taken in November of last year when my girlfriend and I were visiting Tasmania, Australia.
We spent a few days in the small city of Launceston, and visited a national reserve called Cataract Gorge. Most people are there to see the 3 mile stretch of forested river reserve wrapped around the huge gorge, however we were more interested in the local wildlife living there.
We came across a few wallabies and pademelons before spotting half a dozen or so peacocks. They were quite comfortable with people and we were able to get reasonably close to them.
And since I had my 100-500mm lens attached I was able to get some very tight portrait shots. However, the background and lighting wasn’t the best, so we returned again the next morning when the conditions were more favorable to get shots with a cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing background.
This particular photo was my favorite out of a few hundred shots I fired off, capturing this peacock in the midst of him calling out to a mate. The settings I used were ISO 1000, f8, 1/400 sec, zoomed in at 500mm.
