“Sunflower Farm” by Jeani Soderstrom

This photograph captures a Spicebush Swallowtail Butterfly delicately perched on a Common Sunflower, taken at a local sunflower farm where my daughter brought me for Mother’s Day. The day was warm and humid, with an overcast sky that acted as a natural softbox, beautifully diffusing the sunlight. This gentle, even light eliminated harsh shadows and allowed the intricate details of the butterfly’s iridescent wings and the sunflower’s vibrant petals to shine without overexposure.

When we first arrived, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But the moment I stepped into the endless sea of golden blooms, I was enchanted. Sunflowers stretched in every direction, and a lively mix of butterflies and dragonflies floated through the fields. Overwhelmed with excitement, I spent hours patiently following these ephemeral creatures, waiting for the perfect moment when one would settle gracefully on a flower.

That dedication—and the ideal soft lighting—came together to create this special image. At the time, I was shooting with a Canon M50 mirrorless camera paired with an adapted Canon EF 70–200mm lens. It wasn’t the newest or most advanced gear, but it proved a powerful reminder of the timeless saying: “The best camera is the one you have with you.” That day, passion, patience, and the willingness to work with what I had mattered far more than the gear itself.

For anyone seeking inspiration in nature photography, I encourage visiting sunflower farms or summer flower fields. The combination of vibrant blooms, pollinators like butterflies and bees, and soft, natural light often leads to breathtaking images. This experience reaffirmed that with intention and persistence, beautiful photographs can happen anywhere—even when you least expect them.
