In March 2025, I had the privilege of traveling to Finland, where I encountered a remarkable creature that would become the star of my lens—a vibrant, fast-moving ermine (also known as a stoat in its white winter coat).
Watching this small predator dart back and forth across the snow-covered terrain in search of food—and then hide its catch—was not just fascinating, but a true photographic challenge. The ermine moved with such speed and unpredictability that I found myself swiveling in every direction, trying to anticipate its next burst of energy. Left, right, front, back… I was nearly dizzy, but completely captivated.
Eventually, this little marvel became affectionately known as “our Little Star.” It brought such joy to our group as we observed and documented its natural behavior—darting between rocks, disappearing into snow drifts, and reappearing with fierce determination. I still don’t know whether Little Star is male or female, but perhaps that’s part of the charm. What I do know is that this fleeting encounter left a lasting imprint on me.
Capturing this photo meant more than freezing a moment in time—it was about sharing the spirit and agility of an animal that rarely slows down long enough to be seen, let alone photographed. It was a moment of connection, awe, and gratitude—one I won’t soon forget.
