March 2026
Wildlife Photography Contest
The theme for the March 2026 Wildlife Photography Contest is “All Things Black”
Black is never empty—it’s depth, dimension, and mystery.
In nature, darkness is not the absence of light but the presence of contrast. It’s the shimmer on a raven’s feathers, the silent power of a shadowed panther, the gleam of wet fur just before dawn.
This month’s theme, “All Things Black,” challenges you to capture the hidden beauty in darkness—the texture, reflection, and form that only reveal themselves when light is scarce.
Photographing black subjects means mastering subtlety: balancing exposure without losing depth, shaping light without breaking mood, and finding elegance in restraint. When done well, black becomes not a color—but a story.
What We’re Looking For
- Depth and definition — rich blacks that reveal texture, not flat silhouettes
- Intentional contrast — use of highlights and midtones to shape form
- Mood and drama — the emotional resonance of shadow and light interplay
- Control and precision — detail preserved without overexposure
- Visual storytelling — moments where darkness itself carries meaning
Quick Tip
When photographing black subjects, don’t just chase light—shape it.
Expose for the shadows, and let contrast be your guide.
Important Guidelines
- Your image must feature wildlife in a natural setting
- No staged or captive animals will be accepted
- Ethical field practices are required
- Keep post-processing minimal and natural
