May 2024 Photo Contest Image Critique

What You'll Learn:

  • Understand what separates a strong wildlife behavior image from a simple action shot, and how judges evaluate authentic storytelling.
  • Learn how anticipation and field craft can help you capture peak moments, from hunting birds to playful bear cubs and dramatic wildlife interactions.
  • Discover why camera angle and perspective—especially shooting at eye level or from a low point of view—can dramatically improve the impact of your images.
  • See how careful exposure preserves critical detail in challenging subjects, including white birds, dark plumage, and high-contrast wildlife scenes.
  • Explore the role of composition, backgrounds, and cropping in guiding the viewer’s eye and creating stronger, more memorable photographs.
  • Gain practical insights from the judges’ critiques on refining technique, recognizing exceptional behavior, and making thoughtful creative decisions in the field.

What to Expect

Here’s What Our Live Critique Sessions Are Like

Each month, we host a live session where contest winners are revealed and selected images are reviewed in detail by our judges.

You’ll see exactly why certain images stood out, how they were evaluated, and what separated them from the rest.

During the critique, we break down real submissions to show what works, what holds an image back, and how small changes in composition, light, or timing can make a stronger impact.

You’ll also have the opportunity to ask questions and get direct insight into how experienced photographers think through decisions in the field.

If you can’t attend live, the full session is recorded and added to the library so you can watch anytime.

To attend this live event or watch the replay, you must be a member of the Journal of Wildlife Photography.

This session is part of the Journal of Wildlife Photography membership.
