January 2026 Intermediate Winner ( Theme "Breaking The Rules" ) : “Subject Lost" by Jill Johannessen

Subject Lost was photographed during our final zodiac outing in Cierva Cove, Antarctica, following several weather delays. Gentoo penguins were launching from an iceberg into clear, blue water, offering only a brief window for a decisive frame. I held a low angle close to the waterline, kneeling and braced over the side of the zodiac to stay stable while tracking their movement. A fast shutter speed froze the split-second impact and preserved the structure of the splash.

Wildlife images typically aim for control: a clearly visible subject, clean separation, and a moment that is easy to read. This photograph was made with the opposite intention. When the penguin struck the surface, the surge of water expanded across the frame and became the dominant element, partially obscuring the bird. The loss of clarity is deliberate — the splash takes priority, turning a familiar behavior into a study of turbulence, speed, and unpredictability.

In that sense, the image reflects Breaking the Rules by letting chaos, rather than control, define the outcome. Capturing that explosive instant felt like a small victory after the delays, and I am grateful that JoWP connected with the same choice: allowing energy to lead, even when the subject becomes — intentionally — lost.
