"July 2025 Photo Contest Image Critique"

Theme: Small In The Frame
"Thank you Daniel and JOWP. This is my first critique. I’ve learnt a lot." – Michelle Dawson
"Love the suggestions to improve each image." – Victoria Lamb
"Thanks so much Daniel – so informative and helpful!" – Lisa Manifold
"Excellent critique session – thank you!" – Katherine Keith
"Such amazing work everyone!" – Julie Kee

The results are in! Our July 2025 Wildlife Photography Contest challenged members to create images where the subject was intentionally small—using space, scale, and storytelling to elevate the scene.

Once again, our members delivered with creativity, subtlety, and strong visual impact.

This month’s live critique was led by Daniel Cadieux, award-winning wildlife photographer and head judge of our monthly contests. If you missed it, here’s everything you need to know.

💥 What the Judges Looked For

The theme, “Small in the Frame,” asked photographers to let wildlife be just one part of a bigger visual story.

Judges evaluated each image based on:

  • Purposeful subject size — The animal or bird needed to be intentionally small, not just distant or cropped.
  • Use of environment — The best images let the habitat or landscape take the lead while the subject supported the story.
  • Clean, effective composition — Judges looked for strong framing, leading lines, and smart use of negative space.
  • Mood and light — Creative use of color, atmosphere, and lighting helped elevate simple scenes into emotional ones.
  • Theme alignment — Entries needed to feel like a clear, thoughtful interpretation of the theme—not a coincidence.

🔍 What Daniel Covered in the Critique

During the live session, Daniel broke down why certain images worked—and why others missed the mark. Key topics included:

  • Intentional framing: The best images weren’t just zoomed out. They used visual space to enhance mood or scale.
  • Distracting elements: From cluttered branches to tilted horizons, small issues felt magnified when the subject was tiny.
  • Angle and perspective: Eye-level or low angles often gave more presence to small subjects than high or wide shots.
  • When less is more: Daniel showed how restraint—in editing, color, and subject placement—can be powerful.
  • Telling a story with the whole frame: The strongest photos used land, water, and sky as co-stars—not just background.

The session also included lively chat contributions, critique requests, and great community engagement throughout.

💬 What Members Said

  • “This is a great way to learn.”
  • “Thank you for the pointers!”
  • “So many creative approaches—love seeing the variety.”
  • “Would love to see camera settings and species info included on finalist slides.”
